Mary Meeker, a venture capitalist at Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers (KPCB) and trusted source for reporting trends covering the entire digital landscape, recently released her 2015 Internet Trends Report. In it, she points out promising stats about mobile smartphone adoption, consumers’ insatiable appetite for mobile media and the huge opportunity for advertisers to reach engaged mobile users.
You can sift through the full 196 slides, but we’ll cut to the most compelling stats to know if you’re a mobile app developer or advertiser looking to leverage the most popular media screen of our time:
Since 1995, mobile phone users grew from 1% to 73% population penetration globally. 40% of those 5.2B total mobile phone users are using smartphones. That’s 2,800,000,000(2.08B) smartphone users globally.
This is now a mobile world.
The gap between the number of internet users (2.8 Billion) and smartphone users (2.1 Billion) is closing.
Let’s hear it for Mobile Video!
55% of global mobile data traffic comes from Mobile Video. This has increased every year:
Meeker remains optimistic about mobile ad spend growth…(Print remains way over-indexed relative to time spent). Mobile is currently at 3hours a day per user and accounts for 51% of total time spent using digital media.
In the US, Meeker points out a $25 Billion growth opportunity for Mobile Advertising spend, considering how little ad spend is currently happening relative to mobile consumption.
Connectivity via Mobile Smartphones is up dramatically, representing 64% of the US population (vs. just 18% in 2009).
